Influencing Change: Course Agenda


Pre-Program Assignment

Participants read about championing an idea. They identify and analyze a critical influence situation to work on during the program and complete a self-assessment.

Day One

8:00 am | Program Introduction and Overview
Participants learn about the program’s schedule, goals and methods, and why championing innovation is important. They explore key concepts including Idea Champion competencies.

9:15 am | Setting Personal Learning Goals
Participants complete a self-assessment exercise and set personal learning goals for the program.

10:15 am | Communicating Ideas

Participants develop a strong vision of their desired outcome and explore how to more effectively communicate that vision.

11:30 am | Organizational “Street Smarts” Mapping
Participants learn an Organizational “Street Smarts” mapping process to increase their understanding of the organizational context and dynamics relevant to an idea.
Lecture, discussion

12:15 pm | Lunch

1:00 pm | Organizational “Street Smarts” Mapping (continued)
Participants use the Organizational “Street Smarts” mapping process to assess how their own innovation idea is affected in terms of their own organization.
Individual work, small group work, large group debrief

2:00 pm | Stakeholder Mapping
Participants identify key people who can support and affect the outcome of their innovation idea. They analyze the impact of their innovation idea on stakeholders, and identify needed resources and potential sources.

3:15 pm | Break

3:30 pm | Understanding Resistance
Participants gain an understanding of where resistance comes from and how people resist. They identify stakeholder resistance to their innovation idea, and define and practice options for reducing that resistance.

Day 2

8:00 am | Day 2 Preview
Participants review the previous day’s learning, learn what they will be doing on the second day, and raise any questions.

8:15 am | Assess and Enhance Ideas
Participants learn the key success factors for effectively promoting new ideas. They assess the value, compatibility, and risk involved with the innovation idea they wish to champion. They learn to target specific action steps that enhance an innovation idea’s value and explore how to manage and reduce organizational risk.

10:00 am | Strategies For Influencing Stakeholders
Participants explore various strategies for influencing stakeholders.
Lecture, video role model, large group discussion

11:15 am | Choosing Appropriate Strategies
Participants learn guidelines for choosing the most appropriate strategies in a given situation. They apply these guidelines to develop a plan for using these key strategies with their innovation idea.
Lecture/discussion, individual analysis

12:30 pm | Influencing Stakeholders

Participants practice using the strategies with their innovation idea.

Participants develop an overall plan for championing for their innovation idea.
